This training will provide Participants with understanding of targeted intervention to address language and reading comprehension challenges. Evidence-based strategies will be introduced and practiced to help build foundational skills in oral language, vocabulary, working memory, concept imagery and metacognitive skills necessary for comprehending and recalling varied text.

This engaging professional development experience equips educators with practical, student-centered strategies to deepen vocabulary instruction. Participants will explore how to activate prior knowledge, guide students in making meaning of new and complex words, and extend understanding into authentic reading and writing tasks. Emphasis is placed on helping students independently select and apply vocabulary strategies as they encounter increasingly sophisticated text, building both confidence and comprehension.

Multisensory Madness
Participants will explore tactile and kinesthetic activities across phonemic awareness, word reading and spelling, fluency, and vocabulary, while also developing skills in progress monitoring and data collection to ensure instruction remains targeted and effective. Emphasis is placed on empowering educators to customize their instruction without compromising the integrity of structured literacy — and every participant leaves with a bag of practical, ready-to-use multisensory tricks for the classroom.

Participants will explore the foundational connection between phonemic awareness and decoding, develop the ability to identify specific weaknesses in students' phonological skills, and learn how to match targeted strategies to individual student needs. Emphasis is placed on making instruction diagnostic and prescriptive in nature — assessing student performance, pinpointing skill gaps, and applying research-aligned strategies that move every learner forward on the path to reading proficiency.

Participants will explore a rich toolkit of research-aligned strategies — including Oral Category Naming, Rapid Naming with Matrix, Timed Fluency Drills, Quick Blitz, Sentence Scooping, and "Catch Me If You Can" — designed to move students from the sound level to the text level with accuracy, rate, and expression. Emphasis is placed on equipping educators with both informal and formal assessment tools to monitor student progress, identify fluency gaps, and prescribe targeted interventions that build confident, independent readers.

This engaging professional development experience builds educators' accuracy, automaticity, and fluency in teaching the reading and spelling of irregular words through a deep dive into the science behind sight word instruction. Across two focused blocks, participants will explore what a sight word truly is, how the brain stores words, and how to establish a baseline and apply targeted strategies for both reading and spelling — including mnemonics, multisensory practice, and spelling word inventory.
